Arrival in Shanghai was at 5 AM. That is long before most people are at their posts working, so our trek through immigration and customs was expedited by people who really didn't want to be there in the first place. No buses run that early, so we had a few minutes to explore the airport before heading down town. There was a really disturbing mural size ad by an Italian designer depicting two guys passing each other in a hallway checking the other's clothes out. If you followed that, weird. Anyway, we took the bus to the Shanghai Train Station where all our books say you go to purchase tickets for the bus. That seemed a bit counter-intuitive to me, but hey, how can Lonely Planet be wrong? So, we went to a couple ticket counters at the TRAIN station and amazingly, they only sold TRAIN tickets. So we set out for the BUS station and found there were many bus 'stations' all around the train station, but not AT the train station. We bought our tickets and stood around with old men smoking cigarettes under 'No Smoking' signs. Interesting. Once on the bus, life was good all the way to Yangzhou City. Purchasing a SIM card was a study in frustration as I had to physically prove my phone would be OK to use with China Mobile telephone service. Really, the girl took the SIM card out of her phone, put it in mine and made a call. She then sold me the card. Ugn. I now have a Chinese telephone number, I'm somebody...well at least one in a billion. Look for me in the Chinese phone book between Chin and Wang.
