Where Is That Guy From Nightrider?
What a really quirky place Mexico City is! Walking the streets of the Old City, a true variety of music, smells, sights, and ambient sounds filled the experience to the point of bursting. Just when I thought I'd heard everything - from Rod Stewart to Kansas to Michael Jackson to those people who do Funky Town to Paul Anka to Night Ranger - the familiar tune of Take It Easy by the Eagles was playing in two of the Metro stations where we waited. My singing amused a few of the locals, but I couldn't help but take note of the abject musical variety of the day. Add to that a horn blaring a version of the well known Dukes of Hazzard horn sound - 'I wish I was in the land of cotton...´ and you really get an idea of what we experienced. The flourishing bootleg video business also added a bit of visual stimulation to our travels as everything from exercise to language videos (and a few unmentionables in between) filled the well stocked stands. Of course the churches, cathedrals, and basilica were impressive, but the two dogs stuck together may require a whole picture page of their own. The Presidential Palace was nice too, but the two mentally challenged kids riding around in the Barbie coupe stole my attention and my heart. We ate well, of course, and managed to confuse a few vendors along the way. The army guys playing the organ grinder and asking for money in a hat was a bit confusing to us, so I guess we are even. One bright spot to the whole day was that for only 3 pesos you can go into a truly nasty bathroom to experience a side of the city that makes one wish for a nice port-o-potty back home. That's an experience that Visa can't even buy. So, all in all, not a bad day. Lot´s of life, new experiences, sights, sounds, fun, and even a new friend Freddy. He gave us bad directions to one of our destinations, but hey, no one is perfect I guess. That guy from Nightrider would have really made my day. I hear he is a singing god in Germany.
