And On The Way To Puebla...
So, the buss dropped us off on a highway median. We had asked to be let off closer to the city center in Puebla, thinking it would be closer to our destination - the Virreyes Hotel. Turns out, unknown to us at this point, we are miles out of the way. Four lane high speed roadways are not meant to be crossed by people on foot, certainly not be people with full packs and day packs strapped on. Six lanes of running for our lives later we ended up on a path leading up an exit toward town center. At least that is what the sign said. We asked several people along the way for directions to our destination. We received grunts and vague pointing at best. Chances were, we were on the right track. After one and one half miles of hiking, we happened upon a Domino's Pizza Shop in the urban wilderness here. We decided to ask them, figuring the delivery people would know the city fairly well. While awaiting help, the skies opened with a downpour of rain and a thunder storm. Huddled under the Domino's awning, a couple of workers took pity on us and invited us to wait out the storm inside the restaurant. Half an hour later the rain subsided enough for us to start walking again. Still no definite bearing on time or distance, we started hiking ten minute intervals to measure half miles. A few minutes down the road, the heavens opened again. We began moving from impromptu shelters to unlikely coverings as the rain cycled from heavy to just plain soaking. Arriving at a covered bus stop, we waited out a particularly heavy shower. While hiding from the rain, several buses and smaller transports passed without stopping. Finally a larger bus stopped and we asked the driver if by some miracle he was heading anywhere near our hotel. He answered in the affirmative, so we quickly boarded. Our hotel is located between 9th Street and 11th Street. Of all the hundreds of buses running in Puebla, we just happened to be at this particular bus stop, at this particular time, and the buss just happened to stop to let off passengers. Oh yeah, it just happened to be the bus for 9th Street North and South and 11th Street North and South. Less than a minute after we boarded the rain fell so hard it flooded the streets. While on the bus, in a driving rain storm, roads flooded, lightening crashing, people yelling in Spanish, sirens wailing - we rolled past a Wal-Mart Super Center. Surreal stuff. The driver was nice enough to let us know when we reached our cross street. We ran from the bus to under an awning to await a lighter rain. While waiting under the safety of the awning, we watched several people completely covered in water splashed over the road median by trucks and buses. Yuck. After some running around we finally made it safely to our hotel to dry out and find our bearings in a new city.
